A moisturizer does exactly what its name indicates; it moisturizes the skin. Why is this important? One of the main reasons why skin ages, i.e. lacks elasticity or has wrinkles, has to do with the lack of proper moisturization.
If you’ve read my other posts on the other products you should use in your daily facial skin care regimen, you’ll notice that many of these products contain moisturizing agents or ingredients in them. The one difference between those products and the moisturizer is that with the moisturizer once you put it on your face, you leave it on. It’s not washed off like the other products. (Just to mention this: just because a product is washed off of your face doesn’t mean that the product doesn’t work.)
No matter what skin type you have, your skin must be moisturized to have healthy, young-looking skin. The key to moisturized skin is having the right product for your skin type.
Dry Skin: An enriched moisturizer that helps to guard your skin against environmentally-caused dryness while giving your complexion a soft, smooth and conditioned look is the best for this skin type. It forms a shield that decreases moisture evaporation and improves skin resilience and elasticity, and increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture and helps soften and silken skin. Look for a conditioner that contains a conditioning 
agent like dimethicone, which serves as an emollient (creating soft, smooth, and supple skin) and a conditioning agent. Glycerin is also a conditioner which smoothes the skin by adding, attracting, or retaining moisture.
Normal and Combo Skin: This skin type requires a balancing moisturizer which helps to prevent moisture loss while adjusting to the oily and dry areas of your face to maintain a properly hydrated state in those areas. Your moisturizer should impart softening and moisturization without a greasy after-feel. The main thing that this skin type needs is to sustain the skin’s optimum moisture balance. Dimethicone and avocado oil are perfect ingredients for smoothing and softening the skin.
Oily Skin: Yes, even the oily skin types need moisturization, but take heart… there are products for you to use without giving you a greasy feel. The best moisturizers for oily skin are ones that control the excess oil on your skin. An oil control lotion will help prevent oil breakthrough and shine for up to eight hours. It hydrates and conditions dry areas and absorbs excess oil in other areas. The unique emollient formula softens and smoothes skin without an oily after-feel leaving a fresh matte finish and helping your makeup stay fresher-looking longer.
Look for ingredients such as acrylates copolymer oil, which absorbs excess oils on your face while creating a film that maintains moisture, and cyclomethicone, which is a solvent (dissolves surface materials) and an emollient (smoothes and softens the skin). These ingredients along with glycereth-26 (a moisturizer) create healthy, young-looking skin without leaving an oily residue.
